⛵️DIY Sailboat Electrical Panel from scratch🤩

  • Gepubliceerd op 2 maanden geleden

    Odd Life Crafting

This week we did all the wiring for our brand new electrical panel. We are soooo proud of our work.

If you didn't watch how we made our electrical panel yet check this video out: www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbF96...

We’re Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that have bought a 44ft steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200, designed by Joubert and Nivelt) that was abandoned on the hard for 22 years in Guarujá, Brazil. We are on the mission of refitting her to travel the world taking our house with us!

Are you curious to know more about it? Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE and join us every MONDAY for a new episode of our journey!!

Hey great job man. But something you may wish to keep in mind. The Lower the Voltage. The lower the efficiency.!  Which means you will have to Charge the Batteries more often. Which means you will consume more Fuel or take longer with a Solar Panel or Wind Turbine. To be honest I would have gone 240 Volt on the Batteries. And use a DC to AC Step Down Inverter for your 120 volts AC. Which is much more efficient than a Step Up Inverter. Which is what you are using. To power things like Hair Dryers, TVs, lights and such. So in the future when you start getting tired of spending so much money on Fuel. If you wanted to upgrade. You still could WithOut replacing the Cable. Because you only need larger gauge cable for lower voltage. Because lower voltage requires more Amps to sustain the same Wattage. And more Amps means a larger diameter Cable to prevent the cable from heating up from the additional Amps. But just the number of batteries and the type of Inverter. Is all that is really needed to become 20 times more efficient.! Another way to think about that efficiency is. Every time your 2 batteries cycle 20 times. A 240 volt system will only have to cycle 1 time. That is a 20 : 1 increase in efficiency. Which also means that it will both last 20 times longer per cycle. As well as increase the lifespan of your batteries by 20 times longer. So there is real value in 240 volt systems. And because Battleborns aren't that cheap. Setting them up in a more efficient manner increases your batteries value.! So all your work is not in vain. All you need to do to upgrade is get 18 more of the exact same batterie. And put them in Series. Instead of Parallel as you have them now. And a DC to AC Step Down Inverter. To step down the 240V DC to 120V AC. And you will be all set with an upgrade. That will cost more. But you get what you pay for. I hope you find this comment helpful. When you're tired of paying for fuel.! But great video.! I just subbed and gave a 👍.

The purpose of the fuse is to protect the wire so it don’t burn when it is under a load. A 100 amp fuse is to big for #6 wire. I understand that Brazil’s standards will be different than American standards. However, you should google the ampacity rating for the wire size you used and insure your fuse is sized correctly.

Hi Robeerta And Duca , You make me laugh with that accent of yours Duca and how Roberta picks you up when you say something wrong . You both work well together , I don't think I have seen you pair have a arguement yet ,maybe a couple of little tiffs . Duca tell me , I noticed that you didn't use any solder as a second safty in the connections that you crimped with that big yellow crimping tool , why was that , no time or no need .Keep up the good work both of you , oh I love the music that you have chosen .

Very nice work! For more ease on opening/closing the Panel: You could collect all Wires (as you did) on the bottom of the door on the hinge side, then go up to the top, bend the whole bundle down again and from there to the terminals. That way, you have much length for the cables to twist (which it does when moving the door), and not much resistance. I'm sorry for not being able to post a picture of what i tried to explain :-) But anyways: you do a very good job in everything i've seen from you. Carry on!!!

Good work! Question, why didn't you run the secondary panel main power wire to the main fuse? Seems like the bolt terminal could introduce issues later on.

2 maanden geleden
Odd Life Crafting
Odd Life Crafting

Because we wanted the bolt anyway as we didn't want to have the energy straight to the panel. In this way if we ever need to take the panel out we just take the bolt out and the cable goes with the panel. The bolt is made out of a good conductive metal and it is oversized and it is really well isolated, so there is no reason to be any problem. That what we believed at least 😅let's hope for the best. hehehe and if we have any problem in the future we can always change that. 😉

If you have a piece of led strip lighting or something similar add it with a switch to each of your wiring bays. I did it years ago and makes working in those compartments much easy. You can even use one of your old non led lights, you will only use it while you are working so power consumption is not an issue.

@Odd Life Crafting First, I can’t believe you replied to me - watching these videos feels voyeuristic… like I know YOU, but you don’t know me. So to have you reply to me feels odd. That said, I appreciate the reply. Cleary I missed the December episodes. You do realize that once the boat IS in the water, we expect notice of the world tour and when you’ll be stopping at various ports. (North Carolina would be great). ;)

But wait! A few months ago you spashed and we all thought it was time to go sailing. Now you are doing electrical again. Tip put half the lights on separate breakers. Like port and starboard have their own breakers. Same thing have two separate lights in engine room. This way if something needs to be turned off you can still see. As often not on both sides have a problem at the same time. Oh wait this is along time ago. Don't rewire your boat again. Love you kids.

We are going back to the water next month. We are still waiting for some jobs to be done for some people we hired (engine, helm panel, some welds...). We had the lights in different breakers and we actually needed to use a headlamp to work or an extra light anyhow as the light coming from one side was not enough to lite the other side

just saw something that's a absolute NO GO.@ 18:47 you can see dat a positive and negative lead are held against the ceiling by a metal/aluminium bracket. If these wires would scuff and open up the leads this will definitely end up in failure and may even burn up your vessel.

For people who cannot afford these hydraulic crimpers a solder connection remains technically the most reliable and electrically soundest. Open flame cannot be used for soldering because of instant oxidation except for lugs10- 8awg and larger as follow. Start with a clean corrosion free lug held cup side up with a wisegrip ,heat from the outside with a torch and fill with solder wire melted by contact with the lug insides when hot enough. Then plunge the striped wire from the top (with a touch of flux) inside the lug while still hot .Careful of the hot overflow (and save it) , let cool .Grease and shrink wrap exposed copper wires part ( it helps fight vibrationsdamage on small wires too ) . You now have the most secure connection with zero chance of current loss due to marine corrosion .Excellent on battery cables!

Glad to hear you enjoy watching our videos, Tomaz. I think before the bar gets in fire the wires are gonna be on fire first. As it's a negative bar I don't think it's gonna be a problem. The wood need a really high temperature to burn, much more than the wires can handle.

What a great job! But one little suggestion... When boats are underway, there is a lot of vibration. Might I suggest adding locking washers or nylock nut to every connection point so that none of the connections can vibrate loose somewhere down the road; er, somewhere at sea in the middle of night at the worst possible time?

It's time to get sailing, what ever is left can be worked on while sailing or in all the places you will visit. You are going to need something to do while sailing!

Great job! Panel looks amazing. Crimper is impressive and those label printers are fun and make the panel look professional. Miss Fred. He’s a great teacher and hope to see him again. Keep up the good work.

At least stay docked until you get all the electronics done. Radio, radar, GPS, wifi, weather tracking, digital charts.... And make sure your kitchen is complete and that you have plenty of fishing gear. A food dehydrator for fruits for better storage of foods.
