I just started following you guys. Love your attention to detail and how meticulous the workmanship is on this rebuild. I actually got a little emotional "for you" as you got it back in the water. That is not just a rebuild, as there is a lot of love gone into that boat. Good Luck and look forward to seeing more of your videos.

Hello Duca un Roberta - first of all, thank you very much for the detailed insight into your work - now you have 1334 comments - in the hope that this comment will also reach you - I'll start writing. I'm watching your video right now because I'm interested in technology and also dream of going on a sailboat one day and seeing the world - but for now I'm enjoying country life with all its advantages and amenities. Since I now suspect that all repairs are expensive - especially with boats - I have an objection here, because you took such extreme care of the propeller shaft and its safe function - it should not have been in vain! At 20:35 min I see you fill the propeller shaft with oil so that there is no more air bubble in it. Correct? Well, if the shaft doesn't have a surge tank, in my landlubber's opinion it may be that the oil heats up with use. It does - it stretches - the steel case certainly less. If there is air in the shaft - it buffers the pressure, so to speak - if there is no air in it - the oil pressure can cause damage in my opinion - in the best case, pressure is simply reduced by oil loss - because that happens under pressure - it could leak when it cools down stay for sea water - what does the forum say about it - maybe nothing happens because the shaft housing is again in the grease-lubricated shaft or everything stays so cool because it is under the water? Kind regards from Alexander

One thing that's either not shown or it slipped by you. When you install a liquid gasket (generic term) you want to leave it loose in position (just barely tight) until it cures, then, tighten it in place. That way, the cured gasket is pushed proper and installed under force. Otherwise, you'll have it pushed out, but any variation in force (be it expanding from heat cold or mechanical action) will find it easy to bypass the seal since it's just enough to skim over the metal. Just a thought, nothing more. Because this is a boat, and you have to inspect the whole mechanical aspect every few years anyways, you'll probably be alright, but keep it mind. For any application that allows it, i use a set of feeler gauges to space the part i want to seal up until it's time to bolt it solid. I've found that half a mm is perfect for most applications, and one mm for any kind of very thin walled flange.

We do agree Aserta. But in this case we have a rubber gasket. The only reason we aded sikaflex was to fill any imperfection on the painting job on be boat flange. 😊👌🏼

Nice, job. Seems like a good system, but kind of complicated! It's probably a good thing that you took it apart and put it back together a few times so that now you're sure it's together right. One thing I noticed is that there was a LOT of grease in there when you took it out, but you only greased part of the shaft when it was going in, and it didn't seem like that much more went in when you used the grease gun. With the propeller end open and not yet sealed, you should have been able to pump grease into it until it came out on the unsealed propeller end. It seems like that would take a lot of grease, but maybe you just didn't show it. Just want to make sure you have enough grease in there to prevent corrosion. Again, great job!

For all the talk about learning about the system:- You did not tell us which bearing was the correct bearing for the system, which could be verified by the number on the bearing. Its not a good idea to reuse a bearing that was making noises the last time you took the boat out! The style of bearing is important and you had two different style of bearing bearings are generic, two bearings with the same style and numbers are the same. Call the manufacturer of the sealed system and verify you have the correct bearing for system and use new bearing???

I sold bearings for about 16 years. The people warning about overfilling with grease are correct - only about 30% of the available space should be filled with grease. Overfilling causes the grease to churn and overheat. This can cause the grease to melt and separate with very bad results. So far no one has mentioned that converting a bearing from oil to grease changes the maximum speed it can do - sometimes by quite a bit. I don't know what size and brand bearing you are using, but you should seek the help of an engineer or at the very least google for something like "double row spherical roller bearing max speed". It may well be OK as the setup you have looks massively oversized for the job it is doing, but again it is hard to tell without actual sizes and loads.

its a good solid system good learning project. I have done so many drives like this I have lost count. but the systems I did were much larger. The guy who polished the shaft should have checked it for run out. Should be no more than .003 thousands of an inch. Dont beat your self up to bad for forgetting that retainer. one time I stuck two of the helical bearing on in the wrong direction. The bearings had to be heated to install and were $1,200 each. Boss was not a happy camper. The bearings were about about 31 cm x 7.5cm and were special swiss made bearings.

On the sheilded bearing is desighned to run for the life of the bearing. Hope that explains the seal. Often times we would leave the seal on one side as extra seal, and pry out the lube side.

Suggestions when assembly/diassambly always witness punch the components, this way you help maintain balance and ease reassembly. Also those thrust bearings should face each other to cancel the thrust, but absorbe the thrust in both dirrections, Bearings should be packed 30% of capacity. You can make berings run hot or evev fail by over packing. Use Hi Temp grease.

I hope you took pictures and wrote all those seal and bearing numbers down so you can procure backup parts to replace the boats inventory of replacement parts. With age all those parts may get harder and harder to find in the future. If you can't find replacements for all those parts in Brazil you may be able to find them in other countries, as you travel about. If I were going to change anything it would be those old style U-joints that were used to attach the boats transition to your prop shaft. Modern constant-velocity universal joints like used the half shafts of a front drive car would be more forgiving of alignment issues which you may encounter with the new motor. Ask the engineer who helps you with the engine change over about this, as alignments of this nature are very challenging. Your old motor may have not been aligned properly and may have contributed to vibration loosening of bolts, leaking of oil seals and bearing failure. Also the shafts that connect transmission all the way back to and including propeller will have to be in balance to prevent vibrations. Any parts that were changed out can cause balance issues bearings, bolts, nuts, washers, u-joints, Propeller. I know you didn't want to hear any of this, but if you want to get rid of the noise it's important...
