It's about time to create courage and open the trickiest puzzle our sailboat has hidden.
We’re Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that have bought a 44ft steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200, designed by Joubert and Nivelt) that was abandoned on the hard for 22 years in Guarujá, Brazil. We are on the mission of refitting her to travel the world taking our house with us!

Though I maybe late, your steel hull may need a near white metal sandblasting for better surface preparation prior to epoxy painting. With sand blasting, you could thoroughly inspect the integrity of the hull. Your work ethics is excellent.

It's not a blueprint it's a sheet from a boat plan. A boat plan is really useful when one want to refit (=repair) a boat which had been build according to that boat plan.

'Hello Mr Shaft!' 😎 I wish you could have played a bit of Isaac Hayes 'Theme from SHAFT' when you said that. (boring old copyright controls!) Maybe Fred could do some copy right free wah-wah guitar and high hat for you for when Shaft Returns. p.s. but on a serious note, do be extra careful not to drop that drive shaft or bend it.

I am not a boat expert, but from the drawing, you only need two steps to remove the shaft: 1. Remove the bolt #53 to loosen the shaft retainer cap. 2. Pull the shaft together with steel coupler in the engine room.

5 maanden geleden
Odd Life Crafting
Odd Life Crafting

There is a small detail that you didn’t notice. The big bearing support has a smaller internal diameter then the rest of the shaft. That mean the only way to take the shaft out is to take the bearing out. Our if you take the entire system out at once. But then you will need to take the bearing out to take the shaft out any way. 😅

No longer than your boat was in the water the bottom looks bad, I think you need a better paint on the bottom because I pulled my boat after 2 years and it looked better than that and our water here sucks and it eats boats up bad so it’s clear you didn’t get good paint on the bottom

Hi. This is one of the reasons why not to go electric: https://cornellsailing.com/2020/12/electric-shock/ The others are: we would need a lot more solar panels and a lot more batteries for it and we don't have this space.

Duca and Roberta, did you notice how difficult it was to remove the screws from the base of the wheel stanction that was your Phillips head screws instead of straight head screws. Phillips are designed to be low torque fasteners, they push the screwdriver tip out of the screw recess when you apply high torque either to install or extract the screw. That is the reason straight blade screw fasteners are traditionally used in boat building especially where the fasteners are subject to corrosion. That may explain why the previous owner had all the straight blade hardware aboard when you bought the boat. This is a great channel and I enjoy your story so far. Good Luck Mike S

I didn’t get a great view of the bearing. But it looked like it was dirty. Since you have it apart, take those bearings to an industrial bearing supply store and have them inspected. That way you can have confidence in their longevity. Any pitting in the surface of the rollers the inner race or outer race will result in a possible premature failure. Industrial bearing supply stores will also have access to order seals of almost any dimensions. So take your drawing, parts, and old seals to them. That way they can identify and order you proper seals. Make sure they know what kind of oil being used and that the seals will be exposed to oil on one side and salt water on the other. If they can get anything that uses stainless garter spring and stainless case (shell) that would be ideal. You won’t regret getting new bearings and seals. It’s a good investment. I would guess it’s calls for 30 weight oil. (SAE 30w)

@Odd Life Crafting The parts are just standard bearings and seals I suppose. They are not that expensive indeed. But I meant the system itself with the inner and outer tube, the flanges etc. It required quite some machining to get it in this way. And that's what makes such system expensive.

You could have used the bronze sleeve for driving the inner pipe out. By placing it against the outer race, the bronze being softer would not have damaged the race. After all, it was made for doing that. The bronze sleeve places pressure evenly around the outer bearing race and thus against the sleeve.

That is an exceptionally good shaft system, I have seen the same design used on large ships. The oil head pressure is higher than the seawater pressure, so if there is a leak, it would be the oil leaking out instead of seawater leaking in. In today's environmental concerns, an oil that is environmentally safe is being sold for this application in ships. In my experience, we used a light hydraulic oil, non-detergent. You have the plans and info, that is good.
