You should buy the new Yanmar engine to ensure that your boat will have 22 more years of happy sailing; no engine, new or old will be without problems, but if you want to spend more of your time sailing and less time repairing, the new engine makes the most sense.

Nice job! Btw, the name for the arch is a "gallows" if it is used to secure the boom. I find mine also very useful for connecting a bimini. I also have an issue with my sheets position, but that is something I will make a video on later. Also - I made it across the Atlantic! In Dominica now, 21 days solo at sea :D

Dont pay any attention to those out there criticizing your work and time line it's better to take your time. Do the work your self and do it right that way if theres a problem down the road witch you now there will be eventually you'll know how to fix it because you did all the work yourself in the first place and as for time like I said it's better to do it take your time get it right then they have to get out there on your first passage and realize you got a problem it takes as much time as it takes

Happy New Year. It looks as though there is not enough space between the top of the arch and the bottom edge of the boom? Do you have a vang fitted? No traveller means limited availability for sail trim / shape. Will the single block arrangement provide enough mechanical advantage on the main sheet? When you tighten the mainsheet and tack, will the boom still clear the arch / blocks OK or will the blocks smash into each other?

Did you put a fixed pulley in the middle of the arch? Mmmm.... as you can see in sailboats it should be a mobile rail. That's because you can change the angle of the forces between the boom and the boat (the arch). It's better for the structure, less stress. Anyway, hope it works well. Have a great year!!!

My boat has a similar boom and sail design as your boat. I’m concerned by the final design you are considering will not be sufficient for the main sheet. I have two single blocks on the boom and a double block on the traveler. During high wing conditions over 15 knots it is very hard to pull in the sheet. I don’t think your single block configuration will give you sufficient leverage. You will need double or even triple blocks on the boom and arch to give you ample power.

Nice job guys, I’ve been quietly enjoying everything that you are achieving with this rebuild. A great idea to include the option to brace the arch to the deck, which might prove more useful providing bracing out to the sides rather than straight down. Others have already mentioned issues that you will likely have with clearance above the arch, tackle failing and the loss if your mainsheet advantage, but if you haven’t already maybe just try and test out the lateral strength of the arch by throwing the boom out with a bit of force but without any sail/wind load on it and see how much the arch flexes. I’m sure you are already all over it but it’d be good to know how well the arch might be expected to cope with a crash jibe before it happens.....even just how well it’d cope with tacking if the main sheet isn’t controlled and pulled hard in through the tack...?? Good luck to both of you and keep up the enthusiasm and terrific work.

I think you 2 are a doing a marvellous job resurrecting this old lady. It may have taken a while, but you are doing it correctly and learned the ins and outs of your baby along the way. In my opinion you talked too much at the beginning of this episode. You could have achieved as much by putting the occasional caption and showing us the process. The sheet solution, with the end fixed to the boat, going to the boom and and then back down to the cleat, is the same as my father's (much smaller) yacht and it works really well. All the very best to you both (and your crew/helpers) for the New Year.

@Odd Life Crafting Ever since 1993 I have been divorced so intend to sail a smaller boat. I live on the East Coast of South Africa just South of Richards Bay in a slice of paradise called Mtunzini. I really want a 30 or 31 foot yacht, something that I can handle on my own. Hopefully I will have the chance to meet a similarly minded single lady who would be happy to crew with me! I was knocked down in 1992 by a speeding truck and left disabled, but not so bad that I am restricted to a wheelchair. I used to own a small dinghy with my 2 brothers so I know how to handle how the wind acts on the boat. My ideal boat would be a 30 footer that can be sailed single handedly. I have family in S.A., a brother in Los Angeles, a daughter in Ottowa and family in England. It would be great to visit them without having to pay a fortune for air flights, assuming that I can fly with minimal risk of Corona. I was very recently in hospital after being stung by many bees and tested there, gratefully negative for Corona, but I am diabetic, asthmatic and had high blood pressure - probably a reaction to the bee stings.

That main sheet with just i block on boom and one on arch wint give you the purchase you need in heavy weather. Make both of the at least double blocks or trebles. You need a longer main sheet, but in strong wind it will make sailing much easier. Amazing job you hade done of the boat. You should be very proud

You lost a degree of mechanical advantage when you removed that pulley - you may want to rethink that. I was also thinking it would be better to reinstall a traveler track along the top of the arch (like what you had mounted on the boat before, but mounted up high on the arch). It will help you shape the sail while underway by moving the anchor point of the base pulley outboard (downwind) or centered (upwind), or any point in-between. You could use the existing lines to setup the car adjustment controls, and setup your main sheet adjustment directly from a cleated block mounted on the traveller's car, with multiple turns through multi-wheeled blocks to gain a much better mechanical advantage (3:1 or 4:1) on the mainsheet adjustment. Study other main sheet setups in your marina and rig it to work with your setup.

The boat has really come together! From a pure sailing point of view, did you think about adding a traveller (obviously this would make clearance even worse). Also the close proximity of the mainsheet blocks means you cannot sheet the boom to CL as demonstrated in your video. It also means the angle of the sheet is very horizontal when close hauled and this will limit the leech tension you can apply to main. You might have too more heavily use vang to keep leech tension.
